Yeosu Expo aims to forge ‘blue economy’

The organizer of the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu hopes the global fair will help lay the foundation for an eco-friendly development of oceans, which they call a “blue economy.”

The three-month expo will kick off on the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula in May 2012. The event gives significant spotlight to oceans and their importance for mankind as a solution to diverse climate and environmental issues in the 21st century.

The event, the first held in the country since the 1993 Daejeon Expo, will be held under the theme “The Living Ocean and Coast: Diversity of Resources and Creative Activities.”

The Yeosu Expo Organizing Committee is making efforts to overcome the city’s inconvenient accessibility from major cities within the country and the event’s smaller size with its unique theme.

The idea being that the coastal city Yeosu is an ideal venue to be become Korea’s leading frontier of the blue economy in the future.

Korea has recently been calling for a new, ocean-oriented development strategy to expand its competitiveness and cope with the new challenges of a borderless global community.

The country has especially urged the development of the southern coastal regions, which can serve as a key gateway for Northeast Asia, ecological resources and valuable cultural assets.

Eventually, Korea wants to create what’s called the “south coast belt” which will become a catalyst for the nation’s future growth by attracting foreign investors, creating jobs and boosting the regional economy.

The region is expected to pave the way for building a second capital region with robust competitiveness based on diverse regional resources. Such a measure would expedite the establishment of a new ocean economic zone and in the farther future, the establishment of an ocean-oriented territorial structure.
